These five premier colleges are the western version of New England’s small ivies and live up to that reputation superbly. Within a hundred years they have replicated and branded their identities well short of the three centuries of their peers in the northeast. Each has a particular architecture that drives its own character academically and socially.
However, put together, they are more than the sum of the whole. The physical environment is driven by the warm southern California weather, which allows for consistent outdoor activity. Students become strong in their biking skills and skateboarding. They can be seen walking or using mopeds and unicycles to get around.
Students often wear flip-flops and shorts in November as they walk from one campus to the other. Because the colleges are adjacent to one another, it’s common to have Pitzer students interact with Harvey Mudd students who are located just across the street. The Colleges are located an hour east of Los Angeles.
