Cal Tech has a small, very select undergraduate student body passionate about the physical sciences. They collaborate with the larger graduate student body so much so that in the second year of course work, undergraduate students are in some classes with graduate students.
These undergraduates are expected to step up their effort and perform at graduate level. At Cal Tech these exceptional students continue to conduct research in engineering sciences after graduation and so they don’t typically intend to become working engineers in the traditional sense.
Cal Tech grants only Bachelor of Science degrees and PhDs. These students are brilliant, hard workers with a passion for math and science who would rather unravel a puzzling theory than to tinker with screws, nuts and bolts.
